Inside Google Hyderabad

Some workplaces have lots of rules and regulations. Here, it’s completely different. Everyone has a voice, even the newest Noogler. If we see a problem, we solve it, without going through a bunch of bureaucracy or being reprimanded for acting outside our formal job description. Our dress code? “Wear something.”

We work on projects with global impact. Our user operations & policy team prevents spam and fraud in all our products, wherever they’re used. Our sales Googlers support advertisers small and large in India, North America, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand. And our engineers develop tools and processes to make engineers more productive, as well as Google products used by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

We’re as passionate about enjoying ourselves as we are about work. We celebrate local festivals like Diwali and Eid ul-Fitr, and our office features foosball, ping-pong and pool tables, an outdoor basketball court, and indoor cricket pitch, a gym, a massage center and two outstanding cafeterias. We recommend the biryani. Or the haleem.

Some companies have rules and regulations and dress codes. Here, the only dress code is ‘wear something.’ We think doing work that makes an impact is what’s really important.

Google Hyderabad: Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Google Hyderabad a uniquely great place to work?

Hyderabad’s the Indian city where north meets south, and you can see it in our office. We’re in our very own building, home to Googlers from across India, and while we all speak English, when you walk our halls you’ll hear languages including Urdu, Telugu, Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi and Tamil. We transform the office for holidays like Christmas, Diwali (the festival of lights), Eid ul-Fitr (the end of Ramadam) and Holi (the festival of colors). We have our own indoor cricket pitch. Our chefs do an amazing job preparing the cuisines of all 28 Indian states, as well as dishes from around the world.

What kinds of work does Google Hyderabad do?

Our sales teams support small and medium-sized (SMB) advertisers in English-speaking countries, approve ads to run on our global search and content networks, provide sales support to major advertisers around the world and evangelize Google products to SMBs in India and Australia. Our user operations & policy team makes sure that all our products include only quality content, protecting users from account hijacking, spam and improper search results. And we have engineers who’ve worked on global products like Gmail, Calendar, Docs and Maps, as well as on engineering productivity tools like building and test infrastructure and tools, and developer tools like our YouTube, Calendar and OpenSocial APIs. We’ve also had engineers adapting Google products for local markets and managing systems for offices in India and other Asia-Pacific markets.

How do Hyderabad Googlers have fun?

We get together to watch a recording of the previous week’s TGIF in Mountain View every Tuesday, which in addition to keeping us up to speed on what Google’s up to gives us a great office-wide bonding opportunity. We have basketball, foosball, cricket and video-game tournaments. We decorate the office for holidays, and have cubicle-decorating contests. In 2011, the winners included teams with themes like “hotel” and “Alice in Wonderland.” And we go on great off-sites to places like Jaipur and the Maldives.

How does Google Hyderabad work with the local community?

We host events for local techies, like GTUG (Google Technology User Group) meetings, where we discuss everything from Android and App Engine platforms to Apps, YouTube and OpenSocial APIs, and GTAC (Google Testing Automation Conference) events. Our Women Entrepreneurs on the Web initiative works with women to help them grow their businesses. We support NGOs working in and around Hyderabad. And our Googlers volunteer in the community, doing things like working with schoolchildren and beautifying public spaces.

Do any Hyderabad Googlers have unusual backgrounds or hobbies?

Our Googlers have had photographs published in National Geographic, won awards in sailing (one’s currently trying to get sponsorship for a solo circumnavigation of the world) and been international shooting champions and professional cricketers.
