To all #7102); it may concern Be it known that I. PAUL MAUsnR, a subject of the King of .Vnrttemberg. residing at Oberndorf-on-the-Neckar, in the Kingdom of 'urttemberg. German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Firearn'is, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to automatic firearms in which the breech-block is upported from behind by locking-levers actuated by means of a recoil operated slide to unlock the breech-block upon recoil of the firearm.
The main object of this invention is to provide improved means for locking the firing mechanism when the locking-levers are in the unlocking position.
Further objects and details .of the invention will be set forth hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation from the left hand side partly in longitudinal section showing the parts with the breech-block locked in the forward position. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are respectit'ely an underneath plan, an elevation from the right hand side and a vertical cross section of the parts with the breech-block locked in the rearward position. Figs. 2, 6 and 7 are respectively an underneath plan, an elevation from the right hand side and a vertical cross section showing the ln-eeeh-block and the firing mechanism locked. Fig. 8 shows a portion of Fig. 3 with the parts in the position immediately after firing.
The breech-block 7c is locked in the known manner by two automatically actuated levers b rotatably mounted on the rear wall of the breech-casing. \Vhen these levers are set inward (Fig. they support the breechblock from behind and when set outward (Fig. 3) they allow it to pass between them in receding.

left hand lever in this case) a two-armed lever 71 is pivoted in such a manner as to be capable of oscillation in the horizontal plane on the middle ledge of the casing g. The front arm 7) of this lever 7) comprises a nose 72 which through an opening in the casing engages in a recess 11 in the locking-lever 7) whereby the lever p is posithely connected with this locking-lever b. The rear arm 72 of the lever 72 forms a hook 71 at its lower part which when the lockinglevers b are set outward. that is when the breech-block 7c is unlocked, engages with the correspondingly widened hook z of a lever 2 pivoted to the trigger .2 and thereby renders it impossible for the trigger to be pulled (Figs. 3 and 5). The trigger can only be pulled when the breechblock l' is locked. Then the locking-levers b are set inward and the locking-lever 7) c0- operating with the lever 71 has caused the latter to oscillate so that its lockinghook has left the path of the trigger-lever 2' (Figs. 2 and 7).
The rear arm 72 of the lever p merges at the rear into a finger p which cooperates with a shaft 7) rotatably mounted in the grip-ledge 9 This shaft is provided with a recess a in which the finger 1 of the lever 72 is able to enter (Figs. 3 and 5) so that the latter can oscillate freely with the locking-lever b. The shaft 1 can however be rotated by means of the-outwardly projecting lever e in such a manner that the lever 71 is unable to enter the recess 21 but its finger p rests upon the solid end face of the shaft 7*. The lever is then unable to oscillate and the brceel1block lockinglever b is retained in the inwardly rocked position so that the breech-block is locked (Fig.
Two disks o and r are nxed to the shaft '1: and act upon the breech-block lockingdevice a. and the locking device 0 for the. sear. The breech-block locking-device a presents the form of a one-armed lever rotatably mounted in the vertical plane on tile:
grip-ledge g and at its free end it is provided with a forwardly chamfered lockingnose (4 which in the known manner locks the breech-block in the rearward position when the lever a is moved upward (Fig. 4).
The locking-device 0 for the sear consists of a two-armed lever rotatably mounted in the vertical plane on the grip-ledge, its front arm 0 engaging and locking the hook (Z of the sear d which cooperates with the hook 2 of the trigger-lever 2 when the arm 0 is rocked upward (Fig. The rear arm 0 of the locking-lever 0 comprises at its upper part a nose 0 which is constantly pressed by the spring f against the disk '0 This spring f also presses the nose a of the locking-lever a against the disk 0/. The two disks '0 and 'v are provided with recesses 0 o and '0 corresponding to the noses a and c of the locking-levers a and c.
If the adjusting-lever o is set horizontally (Figs. 1, 3, 4c and 5) the nose a of the breech-block locking-lever a, is located in the recess 12 of the disk 2) and the nose 0 of the sear locking-lever 0 is located in the recess r in the disk v The breech-block locking-lever a is therefore operative, the sear locking-lever c inoperative and the lever 22 rotatable with the locking-lever b. The weapon is consequently set for single firing.
If repeating firing is desired the adjusting-lever e is rotated to the median position in which the nose a of the breech-block locking-lever (1 rests on the periphery of the disk 0 and the nose c of the sear lockinglever c in the recess 4) in the disk a The locking-levers a and 0 are now inoperative and the lever 7) is movable with the breechblock locking-lever b.
If the adjusting-lever '0 is caused to occupy the vertical position (Figs. 2, 6 and 7) the noses a and c of the locking-levers a and 0 rest on the periphery of the disks and w. The breech-block locking-lever a is then inoperativefthe sear locking-lever 0 operative and the lever 7) locked in the position in which the breech-block is locked in the forward position by the locking-levers b. The weapon is therefore set at safety and the breech mechanism and the trigger mechanism are both locked. The lever 79 also serves to interrupt the engagement between the sear (Z and the trigger-lever 2 immediately after firing in order to prevent recurrent firing. If the trigger has only been pulled to such an extent that although the striking-pin has been released the hook 2 of the trigger-lever 2 still engages with the hook d of the sear, the rear chamfered face of-the hook of the lever 79 which has been rocked outward on recoil by the lockinglever b encounters the hook 2 and pushes it are in the unlocking position comprising a pivoted two-armed lever having one arm positively connected with one of said breechblock locking-levers and the other arm c0- operating with said firing mechanism.
2. In an automatic firearm, the combination of a breech-block, locking-levers for said breech-block, recoil operated means for actuating said locking-levers, firing mechanism comprising a trigger, a sear and a lever pivoted to said trigger and cooperating with said sear, and means automatically locking said firing mechanism when said breech-block locking-levers are in the unlocking position comprising a pivoted twoarmed lever having one arm positively connected with one of said breech-block locking-levers and the other arm adapted to engage said trigger-lever.
3. In an automatic firearm, the combination of a breech-block, locking-levers therefor, means for actuating said lockinglevers upon recoil to unlock said breechblock, firing mechanism comprising atrigger and. a sear, means controlled by said breech-block locking-levers automatically locking said trigger when said breechblock is in its open position, and manually adjusted means for locking said sear and adapted to lock said trigger locking means in the position in which said breech-block is locked by its locking-levers.

In an automatic firearm, the combination of a breech-block, locking-levers therefor, means for actuating said locking-levers upon recoil to unlock said breech-block, firing mechanism comprising a trigger and a sear, a lever controlled by one of said breech-block locking-levers automatically locking said trigger when said breech-block is in its open position, and manually operated means for locking said sear comprising a part havinga recess allowing'the rocking of said trigger locking-lever in the locking position when said sear locking means is in its inoperative position and an abutment preventing the rocking of said trigger locking-lever in the locking position when said sear locking-lever is in its locking posit-ion thereby locking said breech-block lockinglevers in the locking position.
