CINCINNATI (WKRC) - McDonald's will soon retire the McFlurry's awkward spoon in favor of a slimmer alternative.

The fast-food giant announced the change in a statement obtained by CBS News. Per CBS, McDonald's will begin to serve its McFlurries with the same spoon served with its sundaes, which require much less plastic to produce.

"This small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste in restaurants, while giving customers the same delicious McFlurry they know and love. That's a win-win in our book," McDonald's wrote to the outlet.

The chain joked about its spoon on X in 2020, formerly Twitter, saying "idk who needs to hear this but the McFlurry spoon is not a straw."

According to CBS, the current spoon was designed as a hollow handle that attaches to the McFlurry machine, so that it can be used as a spindle to mix the frozen dessert. The outlet reported that the chain will transition to a reusable spindle that will be cleaned after every McFlurry is made.

Per CBS, McDonald's locations in Europe also ditched the McFlurry's plastic lid in an effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
