Fact: The best way—the only way—to end a meal at McDonald’s is with a McFlurry. We wouldn't even judge you for making a McFlurry your entire meal. The classic combo of ice cream and candy is one of the chain's best indulgences.

While McDonald’s radiates an all-American vibe from its golden arches, the McFlurry was actually invented in Canada in 1995—thanks, Canada! According to Mashed, the father of the McFlurry was New Brunswick franchisee Ron McLellan. Of his genius contribution to the world, he said, “I never expected that my creation would circle the globe with countries mixing together their own unique flavor.” What can we say, Ron? You created one winning combo.

The McFlurry did indeed circle the globe, and after reading the different flavors that are available in different parts of the world, we’re starting to save for a sort of “Around the World in 80 McFlurries” kind of trip. The UK has had the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry (pardon our gaping mouths), Japan has had the Matcha McFlurry, South Africa has had the Chocolate Lime McFlurry, Thailand has had the Tiramisu McFlurry, and Indonesia has had the Coconut Charcoal McFlurry. Until the day we can pack our bags for an “Eat, Pray, Love” journey through McFlurries, we decided to rank all the best flavors ever offered in the U.S.

Keep in mind some of these only make appearances from time to time, and some of them have been discontinued. But don’t lose hope: McDonald’s brings back discontinued flavors all the time, like the popular Butterfinger version. And on April 12, McDonald's will be introducing the Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry for a limited-time only, which we're going to assume will make this list. Who doesn't like strawberry shortcake?

Now, here's a ranking of the best McFlurry flavors from worst to best.

9

M&M's

Sure, marrying vanilla soft serve with M&M’s makes for a good, old-fashioned treat. Compared to other McFlurries, though, this one hovers around…meh. If you’ve ever had it, you know the M&M’s get so hard in their frozen ice cream home they feel like they could chip a tooth.

8

Rolo

Food, Irish cream, Drink, Floats, Milkshake, Frappé coffee, Cream, Ingredient, Affogato, Cuisine,
McDonald's

The Rolo McFlurry has popped back onto the menu from time to time, coinciding with McDonald’s revamping their soft serve to be free of artificial ingredients in 2017. Perhaps that move made this one extra delectable, aided in no small way by the Rolo’s milky chocolate and gooey caramel.

7

Pralines & Cream

Food, Drink, Frozen dessert, Ice cream, Dessert, Cuisine, Frappé coffee, Ingredient, Milkshake, Gelato,
McDonald's

This limited-time flavor had a luscious, buttery caramel swirl that paired with the sugary crunch of candy-coated pecan pieces. It was a dream for the tastebuds and had a heavenly texture. It felt like a bit of a sophisticated alternative to the standard candy aisle McFlurry.

Butterfinger

Food, Cuisine, Dish, Ingredient, Sundae, Ice cream, Frozen dessert, Caramel, Dessert, Drink,
McDonald's

It’s got chocolate, it’s got peanut butter—what else could you want? The Butterfinger McFlurry had never-fail flavors at work, but because Butterfingers are so crisp, it also held onto a good mix of creamy and crunchy.

5

Snickers

Food, Ingredient, Cuisine, Dish, Caramel, Snack, Vegetarian food, American food, Sundae,
McDonald's

An interesting thing about the Snickers McFlurry is that unlike other candy variations, it didn’t actually have chunks of a Snickers bar in it. Instead, McDonald’s added the different elements of the candy bar, kind of like a deconstructed Snickers. Chocolate, caramel, peanuts, nougat—this McFlurry was creamy, gooey, crunchy, fluffy, and sweet.

4

Twix

Food, Cuisine, Snack, Kettle corn, Ingredient, Dish, Popcorn, Junk food, Vegetarian food, American food,
McDonald's

Are you noticing a pattern? The best McFlurries have a little bit of crunch added to the ice cream's smoothness. (Just not so much that they could require a trip to the dentist, like the M&M’s McFlurry.) Twix bars made a perfect mix-in thanks to their chocolate, caramel, and cookie pieces.

3

Oreo

Oreo, Food, Frozen dessert, Dessert, Cream, Ice cream, Dairy, Ingredient, Snack, Stracciatella,
McDonald's

How could the Oreo McFlurry not be high on this list when Oreos are such an eternally perfect snack on their own? It's hard not to eat an entire package of Oreos in one sitting, so crush those bad boys up and sprinkle them throughout soft serve and you’ve got yourself a dessert that truly stands the test of time. That could be why the Oreo McFlurry is always on the menu.

2

Stroopwafel

Food, Cuisine, Dish, Dessert, Ingredient, Trifle, Parfait, Verrine, Cream, Frozen dessert,
McDonald's

McDonald’s rolled out the Stroopwafel McFlurry in the United States in 2019 as part of its “Worldwide Favorites” promotion. Here's hoping McDonald's might make it permanent because the combination of vanilla soft serve, caramel, and chewy, crunchy waffle cookies is something truly special.

1

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup

Food, Dairy, Cream, Whipped cream, Ingredient, Frozen dessert, Sundae, Yogurt, Dessert, Drink,
McDonald's

Specials may come and go, but Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are forever. If only the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup McFlurry was forever, too. That distinctly creamy-meets-fluffy peanut butter, that milky-sweet chocolate—it’s a go-to snack that only reaches new heights of deliciousness when spread throughout soft serve. There’s an entire Twitter account devoted to bringing back this McFlurry.
