Since the game’s release, international players have expressed confusion at the fact that despite being called “Angry Sun”, this version of the sun has a more neutral, though still frowning expression that can be interpreted as many different emotions, but is not clearly angry.
This is simply due to the fact that in the original Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 3, where it originated, it was never called “Angry Sun”, but instead simply “太陽” (“Sun”). The fact that it was made angry in all other game styles was merely a homage to its original expression in Super Mario Bros. 3 rather than something inherent to the original intent of the designers. As such, it was completely natural for the designers to make one of the suns not angry, as the Japanese name did not specify an emotion, which led to the international audience being confused.
