What is the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry?

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry is a newer offering from the popular fast food chain.

McDonald's is releasing the limited-edition flavor along with its longtime St. Patrick's Day staple, the Shamrock Shake.

The Shamrock Shake typically retails for around $3 to $4 depending on size, while a regular Oreo Shamrock McFlurry is typically priced between $4 and $5.

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry combines two of McDonald's most popular desserts: the Oreo McFlurry and the Shamrock Shake.

The Shamrock Shake is "made with creamy vanilla soft serve, blended with mint syrup and topped with a sweet, whipped topping," according to the McDonald's website.

The traditional Oreo McFlurry is a combination of that same "creamy vanilla soft serve" with crunchy, crushed-up pieces of Oreo cookies.

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry is made similarly, combining mint syrup with creamy vanilla soft-serve, and blending in crushed-up Oreo cookies.

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry doesn't traditionally come with a whipped cream topping, but some customers have been known to ask for the customization for an additional fee.

Despite its popularity, the new minty treat hasn't been around for long, and it will only be available at select participating restaurants nationwide, for a limited time.

When was the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry first released?

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry has only been around for a few years.

McDonald's first released the now-iconic seasonal treat in February 2020.

The fast food chain was celebrating the Shamrock Shake's 50th anniversary that same year.

The brand revealed that the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry came to fruition due to the popularity of another limited-edition menu item, the Shamrock Shake.

The Shamrock Shake became known for attracting consumers even during the colder months of the year, typically starting in late February and continuing through the middle of March.

The Shamrock Shake has been a limited-edition McDonald's staple since 1970, just over a decade after Ray Kroc, a distributor for a special milkshake mixing machine, became a franchise agent for the McDonald brothers.

While the McDonald brothers had opened their first McDonald's drive-in restaurant in 1940, the first McDonald's franchise location, in Des Plaines, Illinois, opened its doors on April 15, 1955.

Both the Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry will be available for purchase at most McDonald's locations until March 18, or while supplies last.

Some stores may run out of the iconic desserts sooner, while customers in select markets may be able to snag a Shamrock treat until the end of March.

As reported by ABC News 9 WAOW, 25 cents from each Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry purchase in select locations, like Michigan, will support the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

When will the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry be available this year?

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry and the Shamrock Shake are two of the most iconic McDonald's treats.

Each year, millions of McDonald's customers and ice-cream enthusiasts alike look forward to the day that both treats will be available at the chain's thousands of locations nationwide.

This year, McDonald's revealed that both the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry and the Shamrock Shake will make their return to participating restaurants nationwide beginning on Monday, February 5, 2024.

That's two weeks earlier than last year's release date, which fell on February 20, 2023.

McDonald's didn't provide any additional reasoning as to why they're debuting both desserts ahead of schedule.

However, given the popularity of both the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry and the Shamrock Shake, adding two weeks of sales makes sense for the fast-food chain.

Fans rejoiced at the news, sharing their excitement on their social media channels.

"SHAMROCK SHAKES ARE BACK SHAMROCK SHAKES ARE BACK," tweeted one user, along with the hashtag #shamseason.

"Need a shamrock mcflurry dupe asap that craving is coming I feel it in my bones," another X user tweeted.

"SHAMROCK SHAKES ARE BACK AT MCDONALDS ON MONDAY THIS IS NOT A DRILL," exclaimed another user.
